3 Ways to Empower Yourself to Overcome Obstacles

We all face obstacles as a normal part of living.  Obstacles come in many forms and can originate from outside or inside of ourselves.  Outside obstacles include our environment, other people, physical barriers, etc.  Inside obstacles can come in the form of cognitive processes (thoughts, beliefs, mindset, motivation, etc.), emotions (both positive and negative, chronic and acute emotional states, emotional sensitivity level – feeling “too much” or “too little,” etc.). But, just because encountering obstacles is a normal part of being alive doesn’t mean that you have to allow yourself to be defeated by them.  You can empower yourself to overcome obstacles.overcoming obstacles

3 Ways to Empower Yourself to Overcome Obstacles

1.  Gather Knowledge

The first way to empower yourself to deal with an obstacle is to gather more knowledge about the situation and possible methods of handling it.  Put on your investigative hat – the one that puts judgment aside a operates from a position of curiosity and open-mindedness.  Do research, seek out an expert for guidance, ask questions and clarify answers to make sure you have a good understanding of the situation and the possible avenues for addressing it.

2.  Brainstorm Solutions

Alone, or with supportive help, brainstorm possible solutions to the obstacle.  Come up with as many possibilities as you can, even if some of them are far-fetched and improbable.  Narrow this initial list down to the 3 best solutions. Do a pros and cons list for each that includes the likely outcomes for each course of action.  Pick the one that fits the best for you and go for it!  Keep the other two as “plan B” and “plan C,” just in case your first choice proves to be ineffective.

3.  Update Your Mindset

Overcoming obstacles often includes embracing change and learning from past mistakes.  To defeat obstacles as they come up, you may need to update your mindset so that you view change as an opportunity and mistakes as lessons to be learned and necessary steps toward success.  Examine your “excuses” with a fine tooth comb and dismantle them. Focus on how you can use your knowledge of what doesn’t work and any reasons may have to sabotage yourself to deal more effectively with this new obstacle.  3 Ways to empower yourself to overcome obstacles.
